The routes to IAEA Membership

These are the available levels of IAEA Membership

  1. The first step is to join at AFFILIATE level. You will need to have a comprehensive education and training record relevant to motor vehicle repair and be currently employed in the industry. There is no time limit to remaining an Affiliate, however Affiliates may be granted Working Towards** status and appear on the Working Towards Register, once they have started a recognised IAEA study programme.

  2. To become an ASSOCIATE of the IAEA, you need to have a comprehensive education/relevant training record as well as the relevant training/apprenticeship in vehicle damage assessment as well as having passed the Institute's oral examination in the last four years or passed two of the Institute's written examinations or the equivalent. You will also need to have passed the Institute's practical examination or equivalent* within the last four years.

  3. The top level of Membership is FULL MEMBER**. To achieve this level, you will need a comprehensive education/relevant training record, as well as being engaged as an engineer assessor in an automotive assessing role in connection with automotive damage claims. You will also have passed at least four of the Institute's written examinations (two of which may have been passed at Associate level) as well as having a current (less than four years old) Institute Practical Examination or equivalent.You will also be engaged as an engineer assessor in an automotive assessing role in connection with automotive damage claims.

* ATA VDA holders, for example, but conditions apply

** Whilst studying for the grade of member, candidates must comply with the Institute's strict study guidelines in order to be granted and maintain Working Towards status. Working towards status is the minimum standard required by the ABI (Association of British Insurers) GTA (General Terms of Agreement) document.
