CPD - Continued ProfessionalDevelopment...
Members are required to take part in the Institute's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme. More and more insurers and work providers expect staff and independent engineers to undertake training to ensure that their job skills are current.
The newer technologies – video imaging, assessor software, and Thatcham Time Systems – are here to stay. Employers expect engineers to be multi-skilled, flexible individuals, capable of undertaking a number of different roles.
Events qualifying for CPD are normally related to engineering, science, technology, insurance, or the motor industry, but activities undertaken to improved managerial ability, acquiring a foreign language, or to widen communication capabilities are acceptable.
CPD is: The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the education of professional and technical duties throughout an individual's working life.
Over the course of a year, the Institute requires each member to participate. An assessor who continues to fail to show a commitment to lifelong learning will be downgraded to the next membership grade. A member on the lowest grade will be suspended from the Institute.
A member's CPD commitment may be achieved by attending or undertaking any of the following activities:
Short Courses - organised by the IAEA or other professional institutions; employers' in-house schemes; and other short course providers such as Thatcham.
Conferences and exhibitions - organised by professional institutions or societies; and industry related organisations.
Symposia and Learned Society Meetings - organised by the Institute or other learned societies or professional institutions; and industry related organisations.
Private Study/Self-Directed Learning - learning foreign languages; learning new skills such as computing; private study, such as reading books, publications and learned journals; and watching relevant videos.
Distance Learning - The Open University; Association of Business Schools; The Open College; Engineering Council courses; and the IAEA's own distance learning package.
Further Education Studies - BTEC; City & Guild's; CGLIs; NVQs as appropriate; degrees; and other IAEA recognised studies.
Post Qualification Studies - Higher degrees: MA, MBA, MSc, MPhil, PhD, DSc.
Imparting Knowledge - Making presentations; preparation of papers accepted for conferences and seminars; preparation of articles and reviews accepted for publication; and coaching/teaching/lecturing by non-academics.
