Success in the written examinations allows application for Graduate membership.
Practical examination
The practical examination is the competence check that validates candidates' basic skills.
It takes place annually during October. The duration is one day, though many candidates also attend a familiarisation day prior to the examination.
Candidates will normally have passed all sections of the written examinations and have been working in an engineering assessing role before applying to take this examination. It is, however, a valid practical competence check for any practicing assessor and, as such, this examination is available to any candidate with assessing experience.
Success in the written and practical examinations, along with a period as a practicing assessor, allows application for Incorporated Membership of the Institute.
Oral examinations
The oral examination is designed to meet the needs of mature practicing assessors who, at this stage in their careers, seek membership of the Institute, but who are currently unable to proceed with the more formal written examination route.
The oral examination support materials do not set out to formally educate an unskilled person, and will not make an assessor out of a person who does not have the appropriate background and current experience. Hence this route is only available to the mature, practicing assessor.
Oral examinations are offered at the Institute headquarters and take place at least once a year to meet demand. Success in the oral examinations allows application for Associate membership of the Institute.
Distance learning
The Distance Learning Package is available to those who wish to study for Institute examinations, develop their knowledge, and seek Institute membership, but who do not live within a reasonable traveling distance of a college offering the Institute courses of study leading to the annual written examinations.
The course is divided into the same four sections as the taught courses. Section discs can be purchased individually, or as a set of four. Students are required to complete assigned tasks.
