Nissan's thirst for new technology

BBC reports that Nissan has evolved a technology that will alert the driver if they are showing signs of dehydration

Research has previously been carried out by the European Hydration Institute and Loughborough University with results showing that drivers who were dehydrated were as prone to making errors as those who had consumed alcohol.

The new technology, revealed as 'Soak' involves a sweat-sensitive coating being applied to the drivers seat and steering wheel; these items will then change from blue to yellow to show dehydration.

Professor Peter Wells, an expert in business and sustainability from Cardiff University Business School, said that it is important to monitor the driver as well as the car, with the possibility of measuring other important factors affecting driver performance, such as adrenaline or hormone levels.

'We are going to get more and more of this kind of thing. Many factors affect our ability to drive,' said Professor Wells.

There are currently no plans to bring Soak into production.
