Uber crash was avoidable: Waymo CEO

CEO of Waymo, Google's self-driving car project, John Krafcik said the recent fatality involving a self-driving Uber said that the company has 'a lot of confidence' in its own technology.

'Based on our knowledge of what we've seen so far, in situations like that one, we have a lot of confidence our tech would be robust and would be able to handle situations like that one,' said John, speaking at the 2018 NADA Show.

John said that when shown the video of the crash in Arizona, workers at Waymo were saddened.

'It struck us in a very very major way,' he said. 'We've dedicated ourselves to making this technology safe.'

With around five million miles of self-driving testing completed, Waymo has launched a self-driving service without human supervision in Phoenix with another service in a different city lined up for later this year.
