MIB prepares for post-Brexit travel

At present, UK motorists enjoy the freedom of cross-border travel, without the need for a green card or border checks on motor insurance.

Dominic Clayden, chief executive officer said, 'At present, UK motorists enjoy the freedom of cross-border travel, without the need for a green card or border checks on motor insurance. The MIB fully supports the continuation of this system and hope the Government and the EU are able to preserve this for the benefit of all motorists in the UK as well as the EU.

'Unless the current arrangements are maintained, motorists will need green cards which will have to be checked at borders, causing delays not just in the UK.

'Until the eventual outcome is known, we are continuing work with the Government, European Economic Area bureaux and others to prepare for the use of green cards. It is our hope that we never need to use these.

'The steps we have been taking involve preparing bilateral agreements with each of the MIB equivalents in the 30 countries in the EEA. These agreements ensure that all EEA countries will recognise green cards issued for UK motorists travelling abroad and the same will be true for foreign motorists entering the UK. We want to be confident that this contingency plan is ready before 29 March 2019.

'We are engaging with all our EEA equivalents, on this sensitive and complex process, to ensure we have a back-up plan which is the next-best outcome for all motorists – tourists, business travellers and those transporting goods.

'Whilst there are no immediate changes it will be important, for anyone who is planning to travel on or after 29 March 2019, to check the latest position with gov.uk, MIB or your insurer.'
