IAM launches winter road safety campaign

Steve Clarke of MileageCount is reminding his customer that, ‘With freezing winter weather not far off, it is important for all vehicle operators to be aware of the increased risks they can face at this time of year’

‘During winter 2013, the government's statistics show a total of 57,260 cars were involved in accidents of this type on roads in England and Wales,’ added Steve

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has also announced the launch of a new campaign aimed at helping drivers up and down the country to stay safe when out on the roads over the coming months.

As a result, the IAM's new 'wheels in winter' campaign will provide weekly updates for members of the public on issues ranging from driving safely when faced with adverse weather, to ensuring proper maintenance is carried out on vehicles so they continue to function properly when the temperature drops.

In addition, the campaign will provide updates on adverse weather for specific regions, as well as helping the organisation to develop an increased presence on social media.

The move follows the publication of figures from the Department for Transport highlighting the number of motorists that are killed or seriously injured each year as a result of accidents on wet, flooded and icy roads.

IAM chief executive Nick Stonard said, ‘Driving in winter requires much more care and preparation. The wheels in winter campaign is part of a national effort to cut the number of road traffic collisions and incidents.’

‘Better preparation could hold the key to reducing the number of winter weather-related accidents on the UK's road, which is not only good for road members, but will also reduce fleets running costs,’ concluded Steve Clarke of MileageCount.
