Crash Test and Research Day approaches

The Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators Crash Test and Research Day will take place on Thursday 20 June 2019 at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Leicestershire.

The Institute's 2019 crash test and research day, sponsored by Leica Geosystems and End-to-End Total Loss Management, will be organised along similar lines to the 2018 event, but with a wider variety of crash tests at a range of speeds. Additional testing will be undertaken involving scooters being propelled into impact with a stationary car.

There will again be an area dealing with gathering data from LVI and staged collisions for the benefit of those delegates from the insurance industry studying fraud and whiplash injuries. Some of the vehicles involved in all types of tests will be fitted with a variety of telematics equipment.

This year the Institute will be assisting the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) to provide 'Ground Truth Data' for the validation of Crush Damage Analysis which uses the relationship between velocity change in impacts and the deformation sustained by the vehicles to calculate preimpact speeds. This is often referred to as the Crash3 Algorithm.

There will be a range of delegate participation opportunities, including driving specialist vehicles, such as large goods vehicles, an articulated bulk carrier and fire tender. There will also be vehicle handling opportunities, including driving vehicles with underinflated tyres, incomplete wheel braking, steering a curved path on the limit of adhesion and driving at least one type of autonomous vehicle.

There will be a number of short lectures from: Crash Test Services.com; Leica; UKAS; IMI and possibly from the NPCC and a representative from the Forensic Science Regulator.

Attendance at the Crash Test and Research Day is not confined to members of the Institute and is free of charge to those who register in advance.
